It causes severe pain. It makes it difficult to move. It can damage internal organs. It requires urgent intervention. X-ray or tomography is used for diagnosis. Treatment varies according to the severity of the fracture. Mild fractures heal with rest. Surgery may be required for severe fractures.

What are the symptoms of a pelvic fracture?

Severe pelvic and groin pain is the most obvious symptom of a fracture. The pain increases especially when sitting, standing or moving. The pain can radiate to the groin, waist, hip and lower abdomen. The pelvic area is a structure that carries the weight of the body. Fractures in this area can make walking or standing almost impossible. The patient is usually unable to walk or has to stop due to pain when trying to walk.

When a fracture occurs in the pelvic area, bruising and swelling may occur due to blood accumulation in the surrounding tissues. This bruising can be seen especially around the groin, hips and waist. Some pelvic fracture In cases of pelvic displacement, there may be a visible difference in length between the legs. In addition, a leg that is outside of its natural position (turned outward or shortened appearance) is also an important symptom. Fractures can affect the bladder and urethra. In this case, the patient may have difficulty urinating.

They may not be able to urinate at all or may have blood in their urine. This requires immediate intervention. If the fracture damages internal organs, rectal (from the anus) or, in women, vaginal bleeding may occur. This type of bleeding may be a sign of internal bleeding and can be life-threatening. If internal bleeding occurs due to a fracture, the body may experience sudden blood loss. In this case, the patient may experience symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, and nausea. These signs of shock require immediate medical attention.

If internal organs are damaged along with the fracture, there will be stiffness, swelling and tenderness in the abdominal area. This may be a sign of internal bleeding or organ damage. Severe pelvic trauma can cause blood loss and shock. In these cases, the patient may lose consciousness or be dazed by the environment. If one or more of these symptoms are seen, the person should be taken to a health institution as soon as possible. Pelvic fracture Since it can cause serious complications, diagnosis and treatment should be done by a specialist team.

What Causes Pelvic Fractures?

High-energy impacts can cause serious damage to the pelvic bones. This is especially common in motorcycle or car accidents. Situations such as a person falling down stairs or from a building puts excessive pressure on the pelvic bones and can cause fractures. Hard blows received during contact sports (football, wrestling, skiing, etc.) can cause trauma to the pelvic area. A hard blow to the pelvic area (for example, a heavy object falling) can cause bones to crack or break. Especially in older individuals, fractures can occur even with minor blows due to decreased bone density. Tumors or infections in the pelvic bones weaken the bone tissue and increase the risk of fractures. In very difficult births, if the mother's bone structure is inappropriate, cracks can occur in the pelvic bones.

What are the Treatment Methods for Pelvic Fractures?

Lightweight and stable pelvic fracture In cases, recovery is achieved by resting without the need for surgery. The patient's movement is restricted and bed rest is recommended. During the healing process of the fracture, the patient is prevented from putting too much pressure on the pelvic area. This period can usually last 6 to 12 weeks. Fractures can cause serious pain. For this reason, patients are given painkillers. Blood transfusions can also be given if necessary. If there is damage to the circulatory system or internal organs, supportive treatments are applied for these systems.

It may be recommended to start early movement exercises with the help of physiotherapists. During the fracture healing process, muscle strength may decrease and joint movements may be limited. Therefore, the physical therapy process is very important. Starting with bed exercises, walking and balance exercises are gradually started. The aim is to ensure that the patient returns to their daily lives independently. It is a form of treatment applied externally to temporarily fix the fractured parts in the pelvis.

Nails or wires are placed through the skin to the bones and these nails are fixed with an external metal frame. It is used as an emergency intervention, especially to stop bleeding and ensure tissue stability. Pelvic fracture If the fracture is severe, if the bone ends are displaced, or if there is a risk of damage to internal organs, surgery is required. During this surgery, the broken bones are fixed in the correct position using plates and screws. This method is called “open reduction and internal fixation” (ORIF).

The hospital stay and recovery period are longer after surgery. Fractures can sometimes cause internal bleeding, which is life-threatening. Interventional radiology methods such as embolization or emergency surgical interventions are required to control bleeding. In such cases, the patient may be monitored in intensive care. Supportive devices such as canes, walkers or wheelchairs are used during the patient's recovery process. These help both reduce pain and speed up recovery by preventing weight bearing on the fracture site.

Leğen kemiğinde oluşan bir kırık türüdür.
